I was on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

As you have may or may not have heard..it’s been a very green Olympic Sailing Venue overrun by the infamous green algae, and although the media makes it look terrible, we have had no problem training in it.  Racing could be bit more tricky but they have enough people working on it..it is China after all.So this last Wednesday night I was interviewed with Brian Williams of NBC Nightly news at 6:30pm[MEDIA=9]

A bit of reflection on the Journey

Somewhere over the north pole - Finally after the first cancelled flight, I am in the plane to Beijing, I really am excited it’s 2008 and that is a special year for this trip as it’s my last to China before the games start.  Inside I am smiling ear to ear, for all my life I wanted to do two things, fall in love and fall in love twice.   The love of competition is where I am directing this: the foolish yet steady love I’ve always craved for like the childish crush you grow out of in the twenties.  I had big dreams to be that champion athlete, secretly plotting ways to do it in my many moves.  Well windsurfing turned into the outlet of this determination, and love for the competition.  The equipment is identical, the conditions always change, your opponent always changes, you have to be painfully fit and is endlessly complicated to apply.  But with love there is a time that your love gets crushed, this happened to me in 2004, losing the trials to be the lonely alternate. Too stubborn to quit until the task was completed. It took me till mid 2007 to discover that I’d recovered, I fell in love again with windsurfing…I haven’t been the same since.  Reigniting the fire of competition, and the love of the sport, when everyone around you says no, and you need to be like this and that.  Let me do a quick correction, be yourself, enjoy and love what you do, don’t do it because you have to, do it because you love to.  That bubbly passion should be ooozing from your veins now, that’s what my life is doing right now, living my dream and back in love with a sport that has taken me to over 35 countries, introduced me to my wife and thousands of friends all over the world.  And as the quote on the wall before you’d leave our apartment said, “throw off your boldness, set your sails, and dream, explore and discover.”  And while your at it give it 110% as I’d rather know how it feels to lose than to always wonder.  “Genius is a perceived thing, Greatness is the real thing.”  I’m going to attempt to be great, rise to the competitive occasion and love it every second, and savior every moment I can make of it with you.

Off to China!

So after three sunny and hot weeks in tampa bay florida, I am again in the aiport en route to China for the last training camp before the Olympic Games.  What a busy three weeks, from training non stop in the heat and humidity to planning the last going away party, it was great to have sooo many friends and good times.  This is a once in a lifetime chapter in my book, when everything seems effortless, like all those days of training have came together, support is there friends are there and of course family too.  What an absolute rush, to have the dream coming true, to be living in the shoes I only played with the thoughts of attaining…truly remarkable.  It’s so humbling to have been given this grace to go win a medal.  It excites me and it excites others.  This past few weeks I had 5 interviews, one on CBS in Tampa was a real treat, the anchor Justin Allen actually went out windsurfing as well!  It might have been the most fun on TV for a while, we took over the fishing pier and for some strange reason there was over 10 knots of wind making for screaming passes in full camera view.  It was stellar, when I get to china I’ll upload the clip so you guys can view it!  Ok boarding soon!  Yours, Ben

Wowzers..clunk..clunk..rip

Ok so all of us remember the first day of racing..I tore the pulley out of the bottom of the sail.  So I missed the first race and used my back up sail, the measurer then took my first sail.  Now today, my backup sail tore in half in the biggest monofilm panel.  So back to the beach, lot’s of tape later I am back on the water and ready to go.  Good news is now I have my newer first  sail back in my hands now and I can repair it properly, there is a repair shop in town that opens at 10 AM, hopefully they can fix it quick.  Keep your fingers crossed! I finished in 10th the last race, tomorrow will be a intense day.Regards,Ben
